Smart Modifications: Creating a Functional Mudroom Bench with KCD Cabinets

When it comes to hard-working spaces in the home, the mudroom is a quiet hero. It’s where life’s messes pause before coming inside—so smart storage, easy maintenance, and comfort are key. That’s exactly what one of our customers had in mind when they turned a standard KCD base cabinet into a sleek, built-in bench with storage drawers—proving once again that with a little creativity, even the most utilitarian spaces can shine.

The Modification: Base Cabinet, Reimagined

The project started with a 24" deep KCD base cabinet. To transform it into a functional seating area, the installer reduced the cabinet height to bench level—around 18 inches—by trimming the box and adjusting the face frame to match. Drawers were preserved in the lower section to keep essential storage intact, ideal for stashing shoes, pet supplies, or seasonal gear.

To complete the look, a durable stained wood top was added to act as the bench seat, offering both visual warmth and a comfortable place to sit when coming or going. Framed with matching side panels and toe kick, the end result looks like a custom built-in—without the custom price or lead time.

Why It Works

  • Dual Functionality: The finished bench is both a seat and a storage solution—perfect for tight spaces.

  • Streamlined Style: Clean lines and matched finishes create a seamless look alongside surrounding cabinetry.

  • Durability: KCD's quality construction holds up to the daily in-and-out traffic of the home’s entry points.

Design Tip:

Pair your modified bench with wall-mounted cabinets or floating shelves above for extra storage and visual balance. Hooks, baskets, or labeled bins can take the utility even further.
